Concussion 2015 Movie Overview

Concussion is a 2015 American biographical sports thriller drama film starring Will Smith portraying Bennet Omalu, the forensic pathologist who fought against efforts by National Football League to suppress his research on the brain damage suffered by professional football players. The film was directed and written by Peter Landesman, based on the 2009 GQ exposé Game Brainby Jeanne Marie Laskas. The film also stars Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Albert Brooks. Columbia Pictures will release the film on Christmas Day, 2015.

A dramatic storytelling depiction of Dr. Bennet Omalu’s race-against-time to publicize CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) in American football players and games and the attempts by the NFL to deny the problem and to disparage Omalu. Ridley Scott’s idea of an NFL concussion film was inspired by his study about former NFL stars Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide after suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Scott was set to direct after his film Exodus: Gods and Kings, while he and Facio were looking for an A-list writer. In November and December 2013, two more NFL concussion films were in development, first Game Time Decision with writer/director Matthew A. Cherry, and another film League Of Denial with producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Peter Landesman had based his script on the 2009 GQ article Game Brain byJeanne Marie Laskas.

Principal photography commenced on October 27, 2014, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and filmed there through mid-January. One of the film’s key scenes was shot in Altius Restaurant on Mt. Washington. On November 3-4, filming took place in a church in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. In the first week of December 2014, filming took place at the Braddock Carnegie Library and in Downtown Pittsburgh.
